Earthquake hits Peru

A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.9 hit the coast of Peru on Wednesday, killing hundreds and injuring hundreds more. The earthquake is the worst to hit the country in 35 years and has left thousands homeless....

UCL research could minimise impact of future tsunami

For the first time, a team of experts are set to create tsunami in a controlled environment in order to study their effects on buildings and coastlines. Dr Tiziana Rossetto (UCL, Benfield UCL Hazard Research Centre) and HR Wallinford are collaborating on the EPSRC funded 'Earthquake People Interaction Centre (EPICentre) project to build a tsunami generator to replicate the complexity of these waves that are beyond the capabilities of conventional wave generators...

UCL lecturers interviewed by Al Jazeera in the aftermath of Tuesday's Indonesian earthquake

The Indonesian island of Sumatra was hit by a Magnitude 6.3 earthquake on Tuesday morning, Tremors were felt hundreds of kilometres away in Malaysia and Singapore. It is estimated to have caused at least 70 deaths. The earthquake occurred near Padang and 930 km NNW of Jakarta

The towns of Bukittinggi and Solok were the most affected, with many of their residential buildings having been damaged or collapsed and the local infrastructure significantly impaired.

Dr. Tiziana Rossetto (Programme Director for the MSc in Earthquake Engineering with Disaster Management) and Professor Peter Sammonds (UCL, Earth Science) were asked to provide their comments and expertise in response to this latest Indonesian earthquake. Issues discussed included the susceptibility of Indonesia to earthquake hazards, developments in reconstruction since the last major earthquake event and preventative measures that should be considered as part of the ongoing disaster risk mitigation process.
